Marcus Clarke introduced the gothic novel to the southern hemisphere with His Natural Life, which title, after his death, was changed by publishers to For the Term of His Natural Life. This dark and powerful novel was in contrast to his witty, sometimes malicious, fleeting humor that peppered his other writings. The novel placed him alongside names such as Victor Hugo and Dostoevsky, the great nineteenth-century writers who explored the problems of crime and punishment with insight and humanity.
This interactive presentation of Marcus Clarke’s story integrates a condensed version of his novel, video clips and images from our mini-series, archival material, historical documents, maps, and text notes. It also includes short clips from the 1927 silent film, and a biography which reveals the author as one of the wildest and wittiest of Australia’s literary bohemians of the day. Among his many admirers was Mark Twain who referred to him as “a literary genius -- a genius such as you will not see again for many a long year”; and of his work “so brilliant and fascinating”. The material creates a truly multimedia story-telling experience.
The mini-series was adapted from Marcus Clarke’s novel by Patricia Payne and Wilton Schiller.
